A Random Message on FacebookA few weeks ago, I got a random message on Facebook from a lady, Tracy, I did not know. I looked at it, scanning it. I get random messages from people sometimes asking about different things dealing with photography. I did not know at the time, that message would bring so much joy to my family for the next few days. The message was asking me, if I could identify my grandfather from a picture taken during WWII. I looked at the picture and thought my grandfather was in it, I sent the picture to my little brother; he did not think it was him. In return, my little brother sent me a picture from WWII with my grandfather in it and I sent it to this random lady, Tracy, asking about my grandfather.
(My Grandfather, bottom row second from the left)Tracy would continue to tell me how she was related to me, distantly from the “May” side of the family. Tracy said we had another relative that was also a POW and died during WWII. How luck was I that my grandfather came back? Puts things in perspective fast! She said she would send me pictures later that she had collected when keeping up with the family tree. I remembered my grandfather talking about the “May” side of the family but couldn’t remember. Something about the May/Russell or May/Russ family reunion. I had to talk to my mom.
The May FamilyI ended up talking to my mom and she said the “May”, I remembered was my grandfather’s biological mother, Edna May. She died when my grandfather was really young. My grandfather’s dad ended up remarrying and married the great grandmother I knew, Grandma Eppie.
(Edna May)Tracy did send pictures. She opened a vault for my family. I saw my grandfather’s dad and biological mother. I saw my grandfather as a baby. My little brother, mom and I have looked at those pictures several times. My grandfather’s biological mom looks just like my grandfather and my little brother. The resemblance is crazy! We started to remember this week and we talked about family, something that we have not really done in a long time, as a group.
(My grandfather as a baby, top right side of picture)Disclaimer: I am not telling you to talk to random people on the internet and that it is cool. There are a lot of scary people out there. Be careful!
